MURRIETA, Calif., (UPI) -- Southern California prosecutors charged a 22-year-old woman with child endangerment after a dog attacked her son and mutilated his genitals, court record show.
Carrie Rae McKinney of San Diego County was charged Tuesday, The (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported Thursday. Prosecutor Gerald Fineman said McKinney left her 6-month-old son unattended in a baby carrier April 3 on the kitchen floor of a friend's home in Murrieta, Calif., while a pit-bull mix played near the infant.
McKinney was in another room when she heard her son scream and came to the kitchen to find the boy's testicles had been severed. There was another dog on the premises but Fineman said it appears the second dog was outside at the time of the attack.
Both animals were euthanized, the newspaper said.
Fineman said the matter warranted serious charges against McKinney.
"Leaving the child alone in such a dangerous situation, that exposed," merited the felony child endangerment charge, he said.
