Top 10 Most Physically Fit U.S. Cities
http://access.nscpcdn.com/cp/fte/fitcities/i/fitcities.jpg The healthiest and fittest U.S. city is Washington, D.C., according to the American Fitness Index, an annual report card issued by the American College of Sports Medicine that assesses the physical well-being of the nation's largest urban areas.
This is the third year in a row that the Washington metro area has ranked first.
HealthDay News reports that, compared to people who live in other cities, Washington area residents smoke less, eat more fruits and vegetables, have a lower incidence of obesity, asthma, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, use public transportation more often, walk more and have access to more park space (relative to the city's size) for activities such as biking, running and team sports.
To determine the ranking, U.S. cities are evaluated for the prevalence of chronic disease, preventive health behaviors, access to health care and physical activity, including each city's infrastructure, community assets, policies and opportunities that encourage residents to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.
